Ok, maybe “only” is a little strong but this is undoubtedly the most straightforward way how to dice an onion. This post came about because I was recently talking to a friend about cooking tips. He doesn’t know his way around a spatula so it was more me telling him how I do things so he can try some techniques out to see what works for him.
I am by no means a Master Chef, but I AM a lover of Chef Anne Burrell from Food Networks Worst Cooks in America, that show is loaded with cooking tips for beginners and dabblers. I started watching it for Bobby Flay because I kinda just really love him, ok? Anywho, Chef Anne was going over slicing and dicing in Season 1 or something like that, I don’t even know, there are about a million seasons now, and Bobby AND Chef Tyler Florance are gone, so life just doesn’t make sense. Where was I? Oh, ya, the onion. She was showing how to dice an onion and completely blew my mind. If you asked me to show you how to dice an onion before I would have peeled it, sliced it, then did my best to dice the onion without dicing my fingers. Ladies and gentleman, grab a knife and onion because here is your new way how to dice an onion.

How to Dice an Onion
Step one: I cut the top of the onion off. DO NOT cut off the hairy bits (oh, that sounds…nevermind). You need that to stay on for this cooking tip to work.

Step two: Cut that onion in half lengthwise through the hairy bits. That’s right split it right down the center. You’ll notice my onion still has the skin on. No, this won’t stop you from crying while cutting an onion but it’s just easier for me to peel it this way.

Step three: Peel the onion. It’s so crazy easy to peel an onion after you have cut it in half. No fighting with the skin, place the onion cut side down. It’s easier to chop an onion on the flat surface than play the “will I cut my fingers off today” game with the round end.

Step four: Make a series of vertical cuts across the onion. I find it helps me to kind of pinch the onion as I go so my ends don’t move on me. Be careful not to cut too far back into the roots. This whole thing will be for nothing. You need those hairy bits intact.

Step five: If you are nervous around knives this is probably going to make you shit a brick. Make a single horizontal cut, toward the root right through the middle. Then, make a series of vertical cuts from the front to the back of the onion. Make sure to curl those fingers into a claw, so you leave the kitchen with the same amount of fingers you came in there with.

Boom. You have now successfully diced an onion with one of my favorite cooking tips and are ready to make some meatloaf or something like that. Tell me in the comments below how it went or what you’d like to know how to do next!
